March Concerts

February 28-March 1
 Way Out West

Every AFP artist has something unique to offer, and Way Out West, with the lively music they refer to as “Bordergrass,” is no exception. It’s like Western music on steroids, slowing down occasionally to give the audience a chance to rest. All three are songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, and singers.

A current list of the Top Ten Cowboy/Western CDs in the nation has Down on the Ol' Bar None by Way Out West tied for 7th place.

March 7-8
Sid Hausman

Sid Hausman is a much admired artist from New Mexico, a songwriter who plays banjo and guitar, sings beautifully, and tells great stories. Several songs from his Geronimo’s Land CD were used in the critically acclaimed DVD documentary:Cochise County: Cries from the Border.

Sid is also a visual artist, an illustrator who has had his work published extensively.

March 14-15
Katy Creek Band

Wes and Nancy Ruybal will be making their AFP debut this weekend, bringing their Western Music and Cowboy Americana. Their music and poetry come from their own experiences. Both are fine instrumentalists, and Nancy has a lovely singing voice.

March 21-22
 Keeter Stuart

Keeter, who made his AFP debut in Sep 08, is returning to us with some brand new songs he’ll soon record on his third CD. One CD is a tribute to his famous Uncle Stan (Jones), composer of “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and other great Western songs.

March 28-29
 Call of the West

Jeanne Cahill and Jerome Campbell, among the most versatile of musicians, are both fine singers and songwriters. They are also award-winning instrumentalists: Jeanne was just named the Western Music Association’s Instrumentalist of the Year in 2008, and Jerome was the Merle Travis National Thumbpicking Champion  of 2006.

Coming in April:

4-5 The Desert Sons. Wonderful Western harmonies and instrumentals make this one of the most popular groups in Arizona.
11-12 Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer and the AFP’s founder and artist-in-residence, presents “A Song of Arizona Spring.
18-19 Michael Grande. Michael is an extraordinary guitarist, certainly among the very best, and a soulful singer.
25-26 Tim Wiedenkeller (aka Tim Weed)—we sometimes call him the “versatile virtuoso” for his world-class talents on so many instruments and for the range of genres he covers.

Other Scheduled Concerts:

Four more weekends with Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer and our founder and artist-in-residence:

May 16-17: “Border Crossings”
June 13-14: “Summer’s Song”
July 4-5: “Independence Day: Arizona Style”

Also, we have booked “The West’s Best Cowgirl Balladeer,” Juni Fisher, for May 2-3, Sue Harris (our favorite Phoenix folksinger) for May 9-10, and The Desert Sons for a return engagement on June 6-7.

Announcements:

Have you checked out our bookstore lately? It is becoming more and more of a wonderful gift shop, where you can find our artists’ CDs as well as other special gifts.

Watch for our tabloid-sized, full-color posters around Sierra Vista and beyond. They are proudly displayed at the Sierra Vista Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the Fort Huachuca RV Park (Apache Flats), Cochise Terrace RV Park in Benson, Quail Ridge RV Park in Whetstone (at the intersection of Arizona Highways 82 & 90), Spur Western Wear in Sierra Vista, Hasting’s Books in Sierra Vista, and the Ramsey Canyon Inn.

Speaking of the Ramsey Canyon Inn: In case anyone isn’t aware, it’s that lovely Bed & Breakfast Inn just about a quarter mile west of the AFP. It’s a wonderful place to stay when you visit the AFP. You can take a strenuous hike or an easy one in the morning before coming to our matinee. Shirlene, the owner, has always been a very good neighbor, and she often houses our guest artists.
