BONUS NEWS

Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer and our Founder and Artist-in-Residence, participated in a special event in Sierra Vista on May 16, 2009. He sang a song he had written to commemorate the re-interment of Union soldiers whose graves had been forgotten in Tucson for decades. His song, “May They Rest in Peace Renewed,” was written to the tune of the old hymn, “Amazing Grace.” The location was the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, and the crowd of more than 1,000 included Governor Jan Brewer. More background information, photos, a newspaper article, the song’s lyrics, and a YouTube video are on a the “Soldiers Song” page on Dolan’s site.

Dolan Ellis and the Arizona Folklore Preserve lost a friend and the world lost a music icon, Travis Edmonson, on May 9th, when Travis succumbed to cancer complicated by other medical problems. Travis, who achieved his greatest fame as half of the Bud & Travis duo from 1958 through 1965, was a frequent visitor to the AFP from 2001 through early 2004. He was an important mentor to Dolan and many of the AFP guest artists, as well as the Kingston Trio and others. A testament to his greatness: the numerous unique articles written about him by the Arizona Daily Star, Los Angeles Times, and the New York Times, as well as the Associated Press article that was carried in papers throughout the nation. An article in the Nogales International provided an intimate look at Travis, who grew up in the border town where he developed his love for Mexican music that was so much a part of his subsequent fame. A public memorial service is scheduled in Tucson for May 28 at 3 PM, at St Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Avenue, at River Road. We will miss Travis’ smiling face, but most of all we will miss his enthusiasm for life and his love of music. At the same time, we are grateful that he left us so many recordings of his beautiful voice and guitar.

One More Concert Weekend in May:

May 30-31

Santa Cruz River Band

The Santa Cruz River Band has been performing at the AFP since 2002, following their performance at the big AFP fundraiser, the Red Rooster Ruckus, in October 2001. Ted Ramirez and Michael Ronstadt are outstanding musicians, playing a variety of instruments. Each sings lead and harmony vocals, and each is an accomplished songwriter.

They refer to their music as “Southwestern Folk,” with a mix of Spanish and English and sometimes Native American languages, and a variety of musical styles. Come out this weekend and you’ll see why they are such fan favorites.

June 6-7

The Desert Sons

The Desert Sons are celebrating more than 20 years of making music together, as well as numerous appearances at the Arizona Folklore Preserve, where they always play to adoring audiences who appreciate their tight 3- and 4-part Western harmonies and their beautiful instrumentals.

Buck Ryberg is the lead vocalist, and the others take their turn in that role. Their music spans the traditional Western genre, to lesser known Western songs, to their own compositions.

The Sons have introduced us to otherwise little known songs by great writers such as Marty Robbins (his prophetic “Man Walks Among Us”) and Ian Tyson (“50 Years Ago” and his tribute to Western painter Charles Russell, “The Gift.”

Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer

Presents “Summer’s Song”

Dolan’s theme this weekend covers the good and bad points of summers in Arizona. The bad is the excessive heat in certain desert regions and the dangers of that heat, some of which are not obvious to those who have not lived here. “Camino del Diablo,” his song about an old wagon trail just east of Yuma, is complete with beautiful photos, as is “Sail Ho,” placed in the Superstition Mountains.

The good points come through in songs about “Lake Powell” and Havasu Canyon (“Nature’s Children”), and “The Old Homestead” (all with photographs), and songs such as Dolan’s recent composition, “I’m Home,” about camping in the high desert.

June 20-21

Journey West with Joe Baer

If you like beautiful Western harmonies, you’ll love Journey West, and their recent Trio Harmony Award from the Western Music Association means you won’t be alone.

Their repertoire includes Western (and Western Swing) classics. Journey West also likes to showcase the best of Western music being written today, by the likes of Joyce Woodson, Dave Stamey, and others.

Marvin O’Dell, host of the Internet radio program “Around the Campfire,” says: “Their exquisite harmonies and personable presence keep audiences spellbound.”

This weekend, Journey West will be joined by cowboy singer Joe Baer.

Ted Ramirez and Michael Ronstadt return this weekend with more of their wonderful multicultural Southwestern Folk music.

Cover songs you may hear include the Mexican cowboy song, “La Vaquilla Colorado,” Travis Edmonson’s “Vamos al Baile (Come to the Dance),” or Lalo Guerrero’s hilarious lament “There’s No Tortillas.” You may also hear songs from beyond the Southwest such as “East Virginia Blues” or “Forever Young.”

Both Ted and Michael are native Tucsonans: Ted’s Tucson roots go back to the mid-1700s and Michael’s go back to the late 1800s. That Southwestern heritage comes through strongly in their songwriting and performances.

July 4-5

Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer

Presents “Independence Day: Arizona Style

Our founder and artist-in-residence closes the 2008-2009 season with a salute to American independence, with a special Arizona flavor. A feature of this show is his original song “Amerizona” (“God bless Amerizona, a little itty bitty USA”), which he sang on the History Channel’s series “The States,” as scenes of Arizona were displayed.

Dolan also sings “America the Beautiful” (all verses, in a wonderfully unique arrangement) and other songs that express his pride as an American and an Arizonan.

Dolan’s AFP concerts always include his famous large-screen photography.

Announcements:

Newsletters and Printable Program Schedules:

Please note that the next issue of the AFP Newsletter will be published in August and will cover both August and September. After that issue, we’ll go back to publishing the newsletter monthly. Subscribers are encouraged to forward the newsletter to their friends.

We publish a program schedule which is available at the AFP and other select locations. You can also find it (in printable form) on the Web.

AFP Posters:

If you have been to the AFP in the last few months, you may have noticed the posters we’re displaying for the concerts. These posters are available on the Internet. We began creating them in mid-January 2009, and will maintain all in our online archives.

Lodging:

If you need lodging for your (or your guests’) visit to the AFP, we hope you’ll consider the following, both very generous sponsors of the AFP.

Our artists often stay at the Ramsey Canyon Inn, that lovely Bed & Breakfast Inn just about a quarter mile west of the AFP. You can enjoy their gourmet breakfast, then take a strenuous hike or an easy one in the morning before coming to our matinee. Shirlene, the owner, has always been a very good neighbor.

The Windemere Hotel in Sierra Vista is now housing our artists on many weekends. Those of you who have attended the Cochise Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering probably know that the Windemere has been the host hotel for that event for many years.

On the Air:

We are grateful to Paul Orlando at KTAN Radio 1420 AM in Sierra Vista, who has supported us for many years with public service announcements.

Each week, they take our press release and a music clip we send, and create a PSA that they play several times during the week.
