August 29-30 Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer Presents “Call Me the Balladeer”
Dolan is the founder and artist-in-residence of the AFP, and has
served as
Arizona’s Official State Balladeer
since 1966. His dedication to this role is evidenced by the 300
songs he has written about our state: its people, events,
history, and culture. This weekend’s program will include a
diverse selection of Dolan’s Arizona songs.
Dolan’s AFP concerts always include his famous large-screen photography. |

September Concerts: |

September 5-6 Michael Grande’s guitar work is incredible. He usually opens with one of his instrumentals, and then plays one vocal song after another, most of which are his originals.. The vocals are good, often fun and often thought-provoking, but it is the guitar that sets Michael apart from the rest, and amazes audience members (regulars and those seeing him for the first time) as his left hand moves at lightning speed up and down the fretboard. A local reviewer, Richard Zoller (Sierra Vista Herald), put it very well: “…may be the most exciting guitarist in the world.”

September 12-13 It’s always a good idea to get your reservations in early for this popular group because one or both days may very well be sold out. In the photo, Michael Ronstadt is at left and Ted Ramirez, founder of the Band, at right. Both are great as instrumentalists, singers, and songwriters. Their specialty is what they refer to as “Southwestern Folk,” the music of this very region. In addition to their original songs, their program always includes many songs in Spanish, from the various sub-genres of Mexican folk music.

September 19-20 This weekend will mark the debut of the Tumbling Tumbleweeds on the AFP stage, and you’ll get to see them at our place before their debut at the Cochise Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering next February. They don’t actually tumble, but they do harmonize vocally very well, so well in fact that they won the 2008 Crescendo Award from the Western Music Association. They’ve been together since 2005, and have enjoyed quite a bit of positive press along with the aforementioned award.

September 26-27 Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer Presents “My Arizona Heroes” Dolan’s Arizona heroes come from all walks of life and through all phases of Arizona history. Most of his heroes lived (or are living) extraordinary lives, often taking chances. Join us for this special concert, which may feature songs about 1934 champion cowgirl Alice Greenough, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Geronimo, Frank Murphy (and his “impossible Bradshaw Mountain Railroad”), Reverend John McIntyre (“Keeper of the Town” of Sunnyside, Arizona), or Manzel Carter (and his “low-down, no-down payment home”). |
