September 26-27 Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer Presents “My Arizona Heroes” Dolan’s Arizona heroes come from all walks of life and through all phases of Arizona history. Most of his heroes lived (or are living) extraordinary lives, often taking chances. Join us for this special concert, which may feature songs about 1934 champion cowgirl Alice Greenough, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Geronimo, Frank Murphy (and his “impossible Bradshaw Mountain Railroad”), Reverend John McIntyre (“Keeper of the Town” of Sunnyside, Arizona), or Manzel Carter (and his “low-down, no-down payment home”). Dolan’s famous large-screen photography is always a part of his AFP concerts. |

October 3-4 This is a big year for The Desert Sons, as they celebrate more than 20 years of making music together. At the Arizona Folklore Preserve, they are always much appreciated for their rich voices that blend so beautifully in 3- and 4-part harmonies. An afternoon with The Desert Sons is always a memorable occasion. The popularity of the Desert Sons is evidenced whenever and wherever they play. Fan appreciation is strong for their mix of traditional Western songs, good Western songs that are not well known, and their wonderful original Western songs. It’s not so much that their specialty is Western music, they are Western music. If you’ve never seen this quartet, come out to see them this month—but be sure to make your reservations early. |

October 10-11 Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer Presents “Arizona Roundup” Our founder and artist-in-residence rides in this weekend with a show devoted to cowboys and cowgirls, the fall roundups, and maybe a little bit of rodeo. Dolan will sing songs from his “Cowgirls” CD, and perhaps will include other cowboy songs like “Hereford Redneck” and “The Retirin’ of Old George Cline.” The closing number for this show is always a fan favorite, one that relates what a real cowboy is: “The Man in the Big Hat is Buyin’.” |

October 17-18 Tim Wiedenkeller (aka Tim Weed) Tim has now moved from Tucson to the San Francisco Bay area, so we are very lucky to get this world-class musician back at the Arizona Folklore Preserve. For newer AFP fans who haven’t experienced Tim’s phenomenal talent in the past, you are in for a real treat. This time Tim will be solo, the favorite “band configuration” of many of his fans, who love the audience interaction that happens when he is on stage alone. The image at left says a lot about Tim, and the sub-title reads: “…brings a myriad of talent to the Arizona Folklore Preserve.” His banjo playing is unequaled, and includes his original classical compositions as well as bluegrass, classic country, Western, and just about anything else. He also plays many other instruments, especially guitar, at the world-class level. And he sings with an incredible range. He also composes vocal songs, in practically every genre imaginable. So catch Tim’s concert and he will take you on a musical journey you’ll remember for a long time to come.

October 24-25 Patty Clayton’s Western heritage comes through strongly in her authentic songs about the West of yesterday and of today. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest, where her family had a rich history of ranching. Now she lives in Colorado but spends much of her time on the road, performing at festivals and her own concerts throughout the Southwest. Patty was named the Western Female Vocalist of the Year for 2007 by the Academy of Western Artists, and Female Vocalist of the Year by the Western Music Association in 2004, in addition to being a finalist for many other awards in her genre. Patty has a clear and beautiful voice and plays guitar exceedingly well.

October 31-November 1 Juni Fisher has had two really busy years. In 2008, she was named the Western Music Association Songwriter of the Year. That coveted award followed three straight years of awards from that organization (Crescendo, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year). 2008 was also when Juni was selected for the 2008 Wrangler Award by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The actual ceremony for that award was held on April 18th of this year. Juni combines her great singing and guitar playing talent with unique abilities as a songwriter. Her songs, whether based on actual history, imaginative sequels to other popular songs, or pure speculation, paint pictures so vivid that her characters come to life.
