BONUS NEWS

Tomorrow, November 11th, is Veterans Day. We hope each and every one of you will take the opportunity to honor our heroes, even if it means just watching an event on C-SPAN. There will be parades in many cities, including Phoenix, Tucson, and Sierra Vista.

The Tucson parade will be followed by a wonderful concert on the grounds of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (commonly referred to as the Tucson VA Hospital). Dolan Ellis will make his 5th appearance at the concert, and AFP guest artists Tim Wiedenkeller and Sue Harris will each make their 3rd appearance. Additionally, Mariachi Batiz, who performed at the AFP’s “Gathering Day” in 2007, will present a prelude of about 30 minutes and will close the concert. The exciting lineup also includes the Sons of Orpheus and Judith Williams (accompanied by Tim Wiedenkeller).

The concert starts at 2:00 PM, and Mariachi Batiz will begin their prelude performance at 1:30. The concert is free and open to the public. Because it’s a holiday, there is always plenty of convenient parking available. To get there, just take the 6th Avenue exit off I-10 to the south (left from Sierra Vista, right from Phoenix), go a little more than a block and turn left onto the grounds. You can’t miss it once you get close. It’s a complex of pink buildings, some of the most attractive architecture Tucson has to offer, the first building of which was completed in 1928. Here’s a link to maps and directions.

It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day again, just as it has been for 5 of the 6 previous concerts (the first year, which was the 75th anniversary of the facility, there was a little rain so the concert was moved inside to the lovely historic theatre). The concert will be in the courtyard, surrounded on all four sides by those pink buildings.

Concert Schedule & Information

November Concerts:

November 14-15

Yampa Valley Boys

The “boys” from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Steve Jones and John Fisher, will make their AFP debut this weekend. The following weekend, they’ll be at the Western Music Association’s Festival in Albuquerque, where they are competing for the Crescendo Award for 2009.

Both Steve and John are multi-instrumentalists who sing lead and harmony vocals, and who also tell stories and recite poetry. Steve is also a songwriter, and 5 of his songs are included in the album pictured in the poster.

They have a brand new album, “The Christmas Trail,” and will include some music from that CD in their program as well. The title song, of course, was written in Cochise County around 1908 by Charles Badger Clark.

November 21-22

Kip Calahan

The vivacious Kip Calahan is well known to many AFP fans, having been a guest artist at the Preserve several times since her first appearance in 2003.

Kip has earned awards from the Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists. Her two Western CDs, “Cowboys, Cowgirls, Roundups and Rodeos” and “Dust Devil Angel” are favorites for many at the AFP.

Kip’s original songs range from the very lively, such as “That’s What You Get (When You Marry a Cowboy),” to the very sensitive, such as “Magdalena.”

Kip will be accompanied by Dale Young on bass.

November 28-29

Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer

Presents “Thanksgiving in Arizona”

Our founder and artist-in-residence will entertain the post-Thanksgiving feast crowd with this special concert in celebration of families and friends.

You can expect original songs such as “The Old Homestead.” And of course, Dolan’s beautiful arrangement of “Autumn Leaves” (the inspiration for the poster at left) is always included in his autumn/Thanksgiving concerts.

The 1960s Mama’s and Papa’s hit, “California Dreamin’,” takes on a whole new feeling with Dolan’s vocals and guitar, and he adds more magic with his large-screen photography.

That photography is one of the elements that makes a Dolan Ellis concert unique. Be sure to bring your Thanksgiving guests to see this Grammy-winning artist, who was an original member of The New Christy Minstrels® and is now touring nationally with them again.

Announcements:

AFP Posters:

AFP posters are available on the Internet. We began creating them in mid-January 2009, and will maintain all in our online archives.

Lodging:

If you need lodging for your visit (or your guests’ visit) to the AFP, we hope you’ll consider the following, both very generous sponsors of the AFP.

Our artists often stay at the Ramsey Canyon Inn, that lovely Bed & Breakfast Inn just about a quarter mile west of the AFP. You can enjoy their gourmet breakfast, then take a strenuous hike or an easy one in the morning before coming to our matinee. Shirlene, the owner, has always been a very good neighbor.

The Windemere Hotel in Sierra Vista is now housing our artists on many weekends. Those of you who have attended the Cochise Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering probably know that the Windemere has been the host hotel for that event for many years.

On the Air:

We are grateful to Paul Orlando at KTAN Radio 1420 AM in Sierra Vista, who has supported us for many years with public service announcements.

Each week, they take our press release and a music clip we send, and create a PSA that they play several times during the week.
