BONUS NEWS

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Be sure to make one or more of our December concerts a part of your Christmas celebration. Get the season off to a good start with Jim Jones or the Katy Creek Band early in the month, join Michael Grande the weekend prior to Christmas, or see Dolan Ellis, our founder and artist-in-residence, the weekend between Christmas and the New Year.

RESERVATIONS: The holiday season is upon us, and the winter visitors are beginning to arrive. There will be shows that are sold out. In fact, this past weekend for Dolan’s “Thanksgiving in Arizona” concerts, we had to turn a few people away on Saturday and had to turn a lot of people away on Sunday. The lesson is to make your reservations in advance.

Please remember, however, that a reservation is a firm commitment on your part. Let us know if you can’t make it. We understand that illness and other issues can even necessitate a last-minute cancellation—just be sure to call us at 520-378-6165 as early as possible to let us know you won’t be there so, hopefully, we’ll be able to use your seats for other customers.

GIFT CERTIFICATES: Perfect for giving to your friends in and around Cochise County because they cost almost nothing to mail. They’re a great way to share music, because recipients can use them for live concerts or for items from our bookstore.

You don’t have to come in to purchase a gift certificate. You can mail a check to us (see address at Contacts list at the end of this newsletter) and we’ll send the gift certificates to you or directly to your recipients. Call 520-378-6165 or send an email to reservations@arizonafolklore.com for additional information.

DONATIONS: It’s the time of the year for everyone to think about tax-deductible charitable donations, and since the AFP is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, we hope you’ll consider us. We have quite a few needs, and one of them may be “near and dear” to the hearts of many of you who have been fans for years. You ask whether the Moffett House is open, and we have to tell you we can’t open it at this time. It is in dire need of renovation. We hope that in 2010 we can get it back to its former charming state, and we can make tours of the Moffett House available before and/or after our concerts.

For those of you who never attended a Moffett House concert, and for those who miss that cozy little place, there are some photos on Dolan’s site.

AFP “GATHERING DAY 2010”: It’s all set—the artists, the times, and the cost ($40 for the entire day). The date is Friday, February 12. Lunch will be available for an additional fee.

        10:00 Doris Daley

        11:15 Bill Barwick

        12:45 Tumbling Tumbleweeds

         2:00  Prickly Pair

Doris Daley and Prickly Pair are back by popular demand after performing for Gathering Day last year. The Tumbling Tumbleweeds recently made their AFP debut (a huge success), and Bill Barwick will make his AFP debut on Gathering Day 2010.

More details to follow in the January newsletter. Call 520-378-6165 to make your reservations.

December 5-6

Jim Jones

Jim Jones is a true Westerner, originally from Texas and residing in New Mexico since 1991. In his early career, he was “country” but now he’s WESTERN all the way. He understands the cowboy way of life and writes great songs that tell us the stories.

After several nominations for major awards, Jim’s latest accolade is the 2008 Will Rogers Cowboy Award for Male Vocalist of the Year, Western Category, presented by the Academy of Western Artists.

Jim has now become a Western novelist and is a finalist for two New Mexico Book Awards.

Listen to and watch Jim perform“These Cowboy Boots.”

Katy Creek Band

Wes and Nancy Ruybal are returning this weekend from Maricopa, Arizona, with their  Western Music and Cowboy Americana. Their music and poetry come from their own experiences. Both are fine instrumentalists as well as songwriters, and Nancy has a lovely singing voice.

Listen to and watch Katy Creek perform their original Just an Old Cowboy.”

December 19-20

Michael Grande

Cochise County is very lucky to have Michael Grande, a true guitar virtuoso, as a resident. Not just a guitar virtuoso, an EXCITING guitar virtuoso!

A few years ago, Michael played at the AFP for the weekend after Christmas, and he delighted his audiences with a guitar medley of traditional Christmas music. He has promised to repeat that performance this time, the weekend before Christmas.

Michael is also offering another gift to his AFP fans—all the favorites we have been requesting over the many years he has performed here.

Bring your family and friends to this concert as part of your holiday celebration.

Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer

Presents “Home for the Holidays

The holidays aren’t over till after the New Year, so be sure to catch this special celebration of Christmas, The Old 2009, and The New 2010 presented by our founder and artist-in-residence.

Dolan will sing some of his special Christmas songs, including his originals: “Cowboy’s Vision” and “Arizona Christmas” (“Cactus & Christmas Trees”), and other special Arizona Christmas songs such as “Rock Springs” and “Christmas Trail.” …Or maybe that yodeling Christmas song, “Christmas Cowboy Style.”

You can watch video clips of these songs and many more on Dolan’s Web site. They are on two different pages: Original Songs and Cover Songs.

Announcements:

AFP Posters:

AFP posters are available on the Internet. We began creating them in mid-January 2009, and will maintain all in our online archives.

Lodging:

If you need lodging for your visit (or your guests’ visit) to the AFP, we hope you’ll consider the following, both very generous sponsors of the AFP.

Our artists often stay at the Ramsey Canyon Inn, that lovely Bed & Breakfast Inn just about a quarter mile west of the AFP. You can enjoy their gourmet breakfast, then take a strenuous hike or an easy one in the morning before coming to our matinee. Shirlene, the owner, has always been a very good neighbor.

The Windemere Hotel in Sierra Vista is now housing our artists on many weekends. Those of you who have attended the Cochise Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering probably know that the Windemere has been the host hotel for that event for many years.

On the Air:

We are grateful to Paul Orlando at KTAN Radio 1420 AM in Sierra Vista, who has supported us for many years with public service announcements.

Each week, they take our press release and a music clip we send, and create a PSA that they play several times during the week.
