BONUS NEWS

We made the cover of the Tempo Magazine again. Tempo is the entertainment section of the Sierra Vista Herald. You can read the article (and see the two photos used) online:  http://www.svherald.com/content/entertainment-local/2010/03/25/cochise-county-s-best-kept-secret

That beautiful and inviting photo of the folklore center says “courtesy of Bonnie Brock.” I did provide it to the paper, but asked them to credit Donna Bowman, one of our newer volunteers.

We became aware of Donna’s talent as a photographer soon after she joined the volunteer staff. She has an eye for unusual perspectives. The photo the Herald used was taken from a different angle than any I had ever seen before and makes me want to traverse that bridge and see what’s inside the building.

Donna’s photos are available at the AFP gift shop as note cards and as matted and sleeved 8x10s, and she generously gives 50% of the profits to the AFP. Additional samples are below (and please be aware that the resolution on these photos was lowered drastically to keep the newsletter from being too large—the actual products are beautiful).

CONCERT SCHEDULE AND INFORMATION

Forever Young makes their AFP debut (sort of) on Easter weekend. Actually, Kip Calahan Young has been performing at the AFP since 2003, and Dale, her husband, backed her up on bass last November. So only the duo name is new—that and that Dale is now providing backup harmony for some of the songs.

They’ll take the AFP stage again on Easter weekend, with a presentation of special Easter music. Kip was one of four top female Western musicians who recently recorded a CD of gospel music, Covered in Crimson. Kip sings lead on three of the tracks, and provides harmony vocals on the others.

Kip’s voice is so strong and beautiful that she is often asked to sing with other artists, both in recordings and at live performances. She has won two major awards from the Western Music Association as well as being named Female Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists.

Jim Jones rides in from New Mexico the 2nd weekend of this month to star on the AFP stage. In fact, except for Dolan’s appearance at the end of the month, this is a New Mexico artists’ month: Forever Young and Sid Hausman also live in our neighboring state.

Jim is actually a native of Texas who has lived in New Mexico now for almost 20 years. He’s a cowboy who loves to write and sing about that special way of life.

Jim won the 2008 Will Rogers Cowboy Award for Male Vocalist of the Year, Western Category, presented by the Academy of Western Artists.

Jim has now become a Western novelist and was a finalist in 2009 for two New Mexico Book Awards. The book is set in New Mexico in 1878. Perhaps if you’ve read the book you’d like to add your review to the one on the Barnes & Noble site (www.bn.com), or post the first review at www.amazon.com.

Sid Hausman, as mentioned above, is also from New Mexico…a much admired artist with strong ties among musicians throughout SE Arizona and Phoenix. In fact, Dolan recalls that Sid was one of the very first guest artists to appear at the Moffett House. He is a songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist. Sid is also an extraordinary storyteller.

Visual art is another of Sid Hausman’s many talents, which he expresses in sculpture and illustrations. He has combined storytelling and illustration to write two very popular children’s books: Cactus Critter Bash and One Bullfrog.

Sid collaborated fairly recently on a CD titled Border Town at Midnight with Erik Darling, who has since passed away. Erik was with the famous 1960s group, The Rooftop Singers, who had a huge hit with his “Walk Right In”—a song Dolan Ellis quoted on the screen door entrance of the AFP’s Moffett House:Walk right in, sit right down.” That quote was perfect for the little old ranch house that just felt like home, and brings to mind a musical memory to those of us who enjoyed the folk era.

Several songs from Sid’s Geronimo’s Land CD were used in the critically acclaimed DVD documentary:Cochise County: Cries from the Border.”

Dolan Ellis, our founder and artist-in-residence, and Arizona’s Official State Balladeer, returns after almost 2 months to the stage he designed for his “Song of Arizona Spring” concerts. The star of the show is the title song, “Song of Spring,” complete with some of the most beautiful photography you’ll see of Arizona’s wildflowers and creatures.

In case you haven’t caught a concert by Dolan yet, his large-screen photography is one of the features that sets him apart from the rest. Pair that with the baritone voice with incredible resonance, his melodic 12-string guitar, and diversity as a songwriter…then add his exceptional storytelling capabilities and his humor…and it’s easy to understand why he has now served as Arizona’s Official Balladeer for more than 44 consecutive years, as appointed by all 11 governors who served since 1966.

Dolan Ellis was one of the original members of The New Christy Minstrels®, the folk group that took the country by storm in the early 1960s and won the Grammy for Best Group in 1963. Dolan and four other original members are touring nationally once again, and will be joined by a 6th original teammate, Barry McGuire, for two concerts in California in May.

Ted Ramirez, Tucson’s Official Troubadour and founder of the Santa Cruz River Band, is returning to the AFP as a solo act, by popular demand, on the first weekend in May.

Always a major draw, Ted has brought several configurations of the Santa Cruz River Band to our stage, beginning with the Red Rooster Ruckus in 2001.

One weekend in October 2003, Ted Ramirez played solo concerts, and they were wonderful. Until then, he had often opened for his band as a solo with 2 or 3 songs.

Recently Ted has been performing mostly solo, going back to his original roots, as he reconfigures the band. Those who have caught the solo act have been impressed, as always, with his incredibly soulful voice, his prowess on several different instruments, and his knowledge of the Southwest and Southwestern music.

Ted’s repertoire is an exciting mix of his original music in English and Spanish, and well-chosen cover songs. Listen for songs by his musical and lyrical heroes Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie, as well as his great fellow Tucson friend of Bud & Travis fame, Travis Edmonson, and the “Father of Chicano Music,” Tucson native Lalo Guerrero.

Announcements:

AFP Posters:

AFP posters are available on the Internet. We began creating them in mid-January 2009, and will maintain all in our online archives.

Lodging:

If you need lodging for your visit (or your guests’ visit) to the AFP, we hope you’ll consider the following, both very generous sponsors of the AFP.

Our artists often stay at the Ramsey Canyon Inn, that lovely Bed & Breakfast Inn just about a quarter mile west of the AFP. You can enjoy their gourmet breakfast, then take a strenuous hike or an easy one in the morning before coming to our matinee. Shirlene, the owner, has always been a very good neighbor.

The Windemere Hotel in Sierra Vista is now housing our artists on many weekends. Those of you who have attended the Cochise Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering probably know that the Windemere has been the host hotel for that event for many years.

On the Air:

We are grateful to Paul Orlando at KTAN Radio 1420 AM in Sierra Vista, who has supported us for many years with public service announcements.

Each week, they take our press release and a music clip we send, and create a PSA that they play several times during the week.
